The Hatun Karpay/path of the Paco Q’ero tradition
The Great Initiation into the Andean Paco
Andean Spirituality
BARBARA HESS
4 weekends spread out over a year
The Pana,Chaupi, the Lloqe, and the Athy
Receive the Hatun Karpay initiation and grow your own micha of 12 khuyas
by allying 12 local nature beings i.e. mountains, rivers, woods starting off with your
pacarina (nature mother) and itu apu (nature father).
In this training I will pass on teachings and initiations from Juan and Ivan Nunez del
Prado and Elizabeth Jenkins, Q’ero masters Don Martin Q’espi, Don Lorenzo,
Dona Zenobia, Don Umberto Sonqo Qespi, Dona Marcosa Sonqo, Don Ricardo Apaza
Flores, Dona Rosita Apaza Flores, Dona Augustina Flores, Don Francsisco Apaza Flores.
What is the Hatun Karpay:
The Hatun Karpay means “ the Great Initiation.” This journey is a cycle of initiations and rites to
help you train your spirituality and help you to discover and develop your personal power and
potential. It is a spiritual journey to the sacred sites of Peru to receive initiations that have been
practiced by the Incas for many centuries and passed on from teacher to student.
This Hatun Karpay was passed on to Juan Nunez del Prado by Don Benito Qoriwaman from
Wasao who was a famous fourth level master and spiritual teacher of the Inca tradition.
In 2016 and 2018 I received the Hatun Karpay training right side and left side from Juan and
Ivan Nunez Del Prado. This epic journey led us to many powerful places and temples for example Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Saqsaywaman and Machu Picchu.
Juan and Ivan Nunez Del Prado:
Juan is regarded as one of the foremost experts in the world of the Andean Mystical tradition,
the Inka and the Q’ero Indians of Peru. He is an Anthropologist, Mystic and past University
Professor. His father Oscar ‘discovered’ the Q’ero, the last descendants of the Inca in 1949.
Since 2005, Juan has worked together with his son, Ivan who has been a student of the Andean
Path since seven years old, being initiated in Q’olloriti, one of the most powerful sacred sites in
the Andes ( it is said that you can never be a powerful Paq’o until you have ‘presented yourself ‘
to Lord Q’olloriti at least once. ) Working as a team, they model the powerful Inca concept of Yanantin, the harmonious relationship of different elements.
Juan Nunez Del Prado says:
In the Andes it is believed that you are born with an Inca Seed, a seed of personal power that is
waiting to be awakened, fed and nurtured. An initiatory experience provides the tools for birthing
and sprouting of the seed, an opportunity to move your spirituality from something abstract to
something that is ‘real’ as you learn the energetic practices and apply them into your life.
Indigenous people have the wisdom for which Westerners are longing. The Hatun Karpay
initiation makes this wisdom accessible by waking up your personal potential, leading you into a
richer, deeper experience of your life. As transitions and challenges present themselves, you
move more gracefully towards your authentic self, setting a trajectory alignment with your
values through clarity and appreciation for your own personal power and the life that is in front
of you.
The tradition says that we have 4 different powers:
The Right side, the Phania, develops our Yachay intellectual power and knowledge.
The Middle the Chaupi works extensively with feelings it develops the munay.
It is about love and will together. The meaning behind that is your feelings must be under your
will to consciously love.
The Left side, the Lloqe, is about the Llankay, the action, labor work, how to learn to connect
with the energies and then do something. The healing is part of the Left side, to do the inner
work and later to express it as something outside.
The fourth one is the Athy which is the impulse to get things done.
The Hatun Karpay can also be called as the sum of your capacities.
The Hatun Karpay offers practical tools for interacting with nature, understanding its relevance
in your life and experiencing your place in the world. The Hatun Karpay initiatory experience
has been practiced for hundreds of years in the Andes by the Q’ero Indians, the direct
descendants of the Inca and the prophets and visionaries of the Andes. They are considered to be the keepers of ancient wisdom of the Inka and of the Inka prophecies.
What is the Misha:
Misha means ‘ marked’ by the apus or’ signal’ because in former times Andean pacos
were called by lightning strike. The micha is alive, it is the nucleus of the sacred space it
is the essence between us and the nature beings, a bundle full of power to help
ourselves and serve the community. It is the most important ritualistic item in the
Andean spiritual path envoking the equilibrium for health, relationships, abundance,
cleansing, healing and empowerment. The khuyas (khuyay: love, forgiveness, compassion.) are the physical representation of the nature beings in your micha, the source of power. The micha is created by pilgrimages with haywariquis (Despachos) allying 12 local nature beings in a sacred relationship and receiving the khuyas as a gift in ayni from those nature beings (sacred mountains, lakes, valleys in
Ireland) the khuyas hold all of the nectar, the healing power and wisdom of those nature
being. They are the callers and the channellers.
In this hatun karpay we are realizing our human relationship to Nature. All nature is alive and
aware, with us as part and parcel of a glorious world of living energies. The Q’ero teach us to
form direct, personal and intimate relationships of sacred exchange with the very essence of
Mother Nature. We are taught how to bathe in her healing nectars to become whole, full human
beings, capable of communicating directly with Nature and maintain a sacred harmony of gratitude.

About
I grew up in Germany as a post war child .The loss of my twin sister four days after birth and
having a mum who was not able to express love, I ended up with very little self-worth .Having
worked as a bookbinder by trade all my life, 7 years of that in London, I moved over to Ireland in
1996, where I started up a hand bookbindery which became very successful.
But somehow deep inside I had a lifelong sense of sadness, relationship problems, underlying
sense of emptiness and loneliness. Looking back over my life I was trying to be utterly
connected again as I had been in the womb with Angelika my twin sister, floating around in a
primal bliss of oneness. The problem was that I had spent so many years looking on the outside
for something that could only be found on the inside. Through the path of shamanism, healing
and new knowledge my focus has finally shifted and I am on a new journey.
In 2003 I met my first shamanic teacher Paul O’Halloran. He came to clear our house. It turned
out that the deceased Lady who lived in the cottage before hand was earth bound and had not
fully passed over. I never forget the love and peaceful energy which filled the house when Paul
healed her and helped her to go. I was fascinated and wanted to find out more.
Shortly after that I took part in my first shamanic workshop with Paul. That’s how my journey of
self-discovery and healing began. I had a huge desire to become whole and to heal my soul
wounds. The path of the Healer is the path of the wounded healer to transform pain, anger and
depression into strength, compassion and inner light. My journey took me through three
Medicine Wheels and recently to Peru where I worked with many shamans and mystics in the Sacred Valley and the Jungle.
